Kingsborough Community College (KBCC), part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, is the only community college in Brooklyn, New York. Located in Manhattan Beach, the 71-acre (283,000 m²) campus overlooks Sheepshead Bay, Jamaica Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. In its early years, it also had an annex, known as the "Mid-Brooklyn campus". Kingsborough is the only college in New York City with its own private beach, which is open for swimming during the summer.

Opening in 1909, Canarsie became BPL's thirty-ninth branch in 1932. Five years later, the library moved to more spacious quarters, but by 1957, even more room was requested and a new building was constructed in 1960.

Built on its present site in 1896, the Bay Ridge Free Library, first organized in 1880 by the Bay Ridge Reading Club, became a BPL branch in 1901. The spacious, two-story structure opened in 1960. In 2004 it underwent a $2.1 million renovation that included new lighting, furniture, shelving and 27 new public access computers.
